Dear Sacred Heart and St. Mary on the Lake,

October is a special month dedicated to Mary.  She, above all the saints, point us toward Christ.  Like any good friend (the saints after all are our friends walking with us in this life), Mary is there to help us from her place before the throne of God.  During this month then we focus especially on the great prayer of the Rosary.  The Rosary is a great weapon for our spiritual combat both in our own struggles and in the struggles of those whom we love and care for.  Sometimes we feel utterly helpless in helping others – here is a way to intercede for them and bring great grace into that fight.  The Rosary is a great gift.  Let us pray it well for ourselves and others.  One last recommendation – put a rosary on your pillow as a reminder to pray before you go to bed.

“The Rosary is a long chain that links heaven and earth.  One end of it is in our hands and the other end is in the hands of the Holy Virgin…The Rosary prayer rises like incense to the feet of the Almighty.  Mary responds at once like a beneficial dew, bringing new life to human hearts.”  Saint Thérèse of Lisieux

“The decades of the rosary are like the belt of a machine gun: every bead is a shot, every affection of the soul is as an explosion of faith that frightens off Satan, and Mary once more crushes his head.”  Servant of God Dolindo Ruotolo

“Say the Holy Rosary.  Blessed be that monotony of Hail Mary’s which purifies the monotony of your sins!”  St. Josemaria Escriva

“The Rosary is the best therapy for these distraught, unhappy, fearful, and frustrated souls, precisely because it involves the simultaneous use of three powers: the physical, the vocal, and the spiritual…”  Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

“I thought that I had no time for faith nor time to pray, then I saw an armless man saying his Rosary with his feet.”  John Locke  (This quote reminds me of a time I visited someone in jail.  He showed me the comb he was able to have while there.  He broke off a tooth ten teeth into the comb to make a decade and thus used it to pray the rosary while he was there!)

I want to mention an upcoming opportunity for the young ladies of our parishes who are interested in finding out more about what Religious life is like.  We had some novices from the Sisters of Mercy in Alma visit the school this past week – what a joy they were!

Nun Run (in-person Convent Visitations) – Saturday Nov 20th we will carpool to the Servants of God’s Love, Society of Our Lady of the Most Holy Trinity (SOLT Sisters), home of a Consecrated Virgin, and Cloistered Dominicans.  The day will include Mass, meals, Q&A and presentations with the Sisters and Consecrated Virgins.  We are finally back to an in-person event!  Dawn Hausmann: 517-342-2506

God Bless,

Fr. Todd

Sacred Heart Religious Educations

“But Jesus called for them and said,
‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them;
for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.
Truly I tell you,
whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child,
will never enter it.”  Luke 18: 16-17
