Sacred Heart Students Share Acts of Kindness
Last week the 5th and 6th grade students at Scared Heart School made birdhouses during Life Skills Class. The class meets twice a week and the lesson plans include: sewing on a button, packing for a trip, fire safety, first aid, leadership and even restaurant etiquette which ended with a trip to Rumors for lunch. The class is taught by Bev Applegate and she has a passion for these students. She began the year with a lofty goal of giving our students hand-on experiences. She wants them to learn skills that will help them as they grow into adulthood. The students have loved the class and they really enjoy when they get to leave the school and have experiences out in the community.
Mrs. Applegate has woven Random Act of Kindness into the class as a way to teach the students to look outward. It is very important to her that the students push themselves past their comfort level and gain personal experiences. She has asked the students to give away something that they each made, that was special, to a stranger who might be hurting. This proved to be difficult but each one of the students completed the task and found out, that with a little courage, they became stronger people. “This time we are going to spread the kindness to someone we know,” said Applegate. The students are excited to share the completed birdhouses with a parent or close neighbor.
